Kim's Story
In January of 2014, Kim Hedin was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. During a colonoscopy, a large mass was found on the colon and after a CT scan and MRI, it had been confirmed that the colon cancer had spread to the liver. Fortunately, chemotherapy and surgery were both options. After visits to Abbott Northwestern, the University of Minnesota, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Kim and her family decided that Kim should undergo chemotherapy at the University of Minnesota and have surgery done at the Mayo Clinic.
Kim started off treatment very strong and feeling great, but after two rounds of chemotherapy, she became ill from some of the side effects from chemotherapy treatments. Kim was unable to work for several weeks, which made it very difficult for a single woman with incoming medical bills and mortgage payments.
On May 29, Kim had a successful colon and liver resection at the Mayo Clinic! The surgery was successful with no complications, and they were able to remove all cancer during surgery! Kim was told that there would be no changes after surgery and that she could expect to live a normal life. However, after six days in the hospital and two weeks of recovery at home, Kim was admitted back into the Mayo for another six days while she recovered from a Pleural Effusion, or fluid in her lungs and liver, which is a common complication after surgery. Even with Kim's setbacks we are all grateful for the medical team at the Mayo Clinic who did a miraculous job on Kim's surgery. Currently, Kim is recovering from surgery before another round of chemotherapy begins.
Kim is finally on the road to recovery and has received so much love and support from her children, friends, family, and medical team! Kim is the most kind, genuine, and gracious woman, always looking to help others and putting others before herself. When Kim's family was young, she enjoyed doing volunteer work at St. Peter's Church, delivering Meals on Wheels, assisting at the local schools, and helping at Birchwood Nursing Home.
With this being said, we are hoping to raise as much money as possible to help Kim and her family as they pay for Kim’s medical bills and living expenses while she is unable to work. As a single woman, Kim worked two jobs over the past ten years before she was diagnosed with cancer and financially it has been very difficult for Kim to be off of work for such a long period of time.
Kim has said that the most difficult part of this journey has been accepting help from others, but Kim is amazed and humbled at how many kind people have come forward in her time of need.
Please join us in helping to make Kim’s recovery an easy transition—we appreciate any donation you can give!
Thank you so much!
